Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

This procedure is performed as an attempt to retain a tooth which may otherwise need to be removed.

The process involves isolating, cleaning, shaping and then filling the internal anatomy of the tooth known as the root canal system.

This becomes necessary when the living portion within the tooth, known as the pulp (commonly, though inaccurately referred to as the nerve) becomes either irreversibly inflamed or infected.

This can cause a range of symptoms such as pain to bite on, swelling, discharge, toothache or even no symptoms whatsoever.

To resolve the problem there is often a choice between either removing the tooth (termed an extraction) or attempting to keep the tooth by performing Endodontic or Root Canal Treatment.
